Borussia Mönchengladbach
To celebrate Borussia Mönchengladbach’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League at the culmination of the 2019/20 season, I created a celebratory graphic for their social media channels in a variety of sizes.

Towards the end of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, I was commissioned to design a vibrant and celebratory social media graphic to highlight Borussia Mönchengladbach’s top four finish in the league that ensured their qualification to the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League.

The brief required me to capture the sense of victory and celebration, featuring all of the team’s star players, manager, and mascot to create social media content that would be published across all of the club’s channels.

In total there would be 11 figures featured on the graphic with the tagline #GladToBeBach, so my use of composition and space would be instrumental in delivering a great design.

The Process

The project began with me sketching out some ideas and from the very start, I liked the idea of using the club’s diamond-shaped crest within the design. Following this, I sourced all images of the required players, mascot, and manager and cut them out from their backgrounds.

Once I’d done this started composing the graphic and took the time to correctly place each club member. It was my aim to achieve a sense of symmetry within the design and to do this I organised my sourced imagery so that I had an even number of club members facing left, centrally, and facing to the right of the image, to achieve the balance I desired.

The process involved a lot of trial and error and I had to source alternative images for some players to achieve that symmetry I’d targeted from the outset. Once I’d achieved this I edited the Champions Flag logo onto the corner flag held by their star player, Marcus Thuram, followed by the tagline #GladToBeBach.

The Outcome

I created a social media graphic for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Instagram and Twitter channels with the necessary sizes for both posts and stories. The final post was a symmetrical design that achieved the balance that I’d set out to accomplish at the start of the project. Once I’d composed the layout in Photoshop I enhanced each club member’s image to create a striking, vibrant, and impactful graphic that encapsulated the sense of achievement and celebration in reaching the UEFA Champions League for the first time in three years.
